  • according as ~ [~에 따라서 + 절]
  • - according as the prices go up [물가가 올라감에 따라서]

 

  • according to ~ [~에 따라서], [~에 의하면]
  • - Offenders will be punished according to the seriousness of their crimes. [위반자는 죄의 중함에 따라서 처벌된다.]
  • - according to the Bible [성서에 의하면]
  • 1 as shown by something or stated by someone
  • - According to the police, his attackers beat him with a blunt instrument.
  • ► Don’t sayaccording to me’ or ‘according to my opinion/point of view’. Say in my opinion: In my opinion his first book is much better.
  • 2 in a way that depends on differences in situations or amounts
  • - You will be paid according to the amount of work you do.
  • 3 in a way that agrees with a system or plan, or obeys a set of rules
  • - The game will be played according to rules laid down for the 1992 Cup.

 

  • account for ~ [~을 설명하다=explain], [~에 책임을 지다]
  • - account for one’s conduct [자기의 행동을 설명하다]
  • - account for one’s promise [약속에 책임을 지다]
  • 1 to form a particular amount or part of something
  • - Afro-Americans account for 12% of the US population.
  • 2 to be the reason why something happens = explain
  • - Recent pressure at work may account for his behavior.
  • 3 to give a satisfactory explanation of why something has happened or why you did something = explain
  • - Can you account for your movements on that night?
  • 4 to say where all the members of a group of people or things are, especially because you are worried that some of them may be lost
  • - Three days after the earthquake, more than 150 people had still to be accounted for.

 

  • admit of ~ [~의 여지가 있다]
  • - It admits of no excuse. [변명의 여지가 없다.]
  • formal  if a situation admits of a particular explanation, that explanation can be accepted as possible
  • - The facts admit of no other explanation.

 

  • after a while [잠시 (얼마) 후에]
  • a while; a period of time, especially a short one
  • - It takes a while to recover from the operation.

  • all but ~ [거의, 기반=almost], [~을 제외한 전부]
  • - He is all but dead. [죽은 거나 마찬가지다.]
  • - All but one were present. [한 사람을 빼놓고 전부 출석했다.]

  • all right [괜찮다, 지장 없다]
  • GOOD satisfactory, but not excellent = okay
  • - ‘What’s the food like?’ ‘It’s all right, but the place on campus is better.’
  • NO PROBLEMS not ill, hurt, or upset or not having any problems = okay
  • - Kate looks really unhappy – I’d better make sure she’s all right.
  • 3 → do all right (for yourself/herself etc)
  • SUITABLE used to say whether something is suitable or convenient = okay
  • - all right with/by/for- Is Thursday morning all right with you?
  • 5 → it’s all right
  • 6 → it’s/that’s all right
  • PERMISSION used to ask or give permission for something = okay
  • - Would it be all right if I left early?
  • AGREEMENT used to agree with someone’s suggestion, although you may be slightly unwilling = okay
  • - ‘Why not come along?’ ‘Oh, all right.’
  • UNDERSTANDING [sentence adverb] used to check that someone understands what you have said, or to show that you understand = okay
  • - ‘The train leaves at 5.30.’ ‘All right, I’m coming!’
  • 10 THREATEN used when asking in a threatening or angry way what someone’s intentions are = okay
  • - All right, you two. What are you doing in my room?
  • 11 CHANGE/END SUBJECT used to introduce a new subject or to end a conversation = okay
  • - All right, now I’d like to introduce our first speaker.
  • 12 → it’s all right for somebody
  • 13 EMPHASIZE informal used to emphasize that you are certain about something
  • - ‘Are you sure it was Bill?’ ‘Oh, yes, it was him all right.’
  • 14 HAPPY 미국식 informal used to say you are happy about something you have just been told
  • - You passed? All right!
  • 15 LIKE 영국식 used to describe someone you like or approve of
  • - ‘The new boss isn’t too bad, is she?’ ‘No, she’s all right.’
  • 16 GREETING 영국식 informal used as a greeting when you meet someone you know well, or reply to a greeting
  • - ‘How are you, John?’ ‘Oh, all right – can’t complain.’
  • 17 → I’m all right Jack
  • 18 → it’ll be all right on the night

 

  • all the better for ~ [(~때문에) 오히려 더 좋게]
  • - I love him all the better for his faults. [나는 그의 결점 때문에 오히려 더 좋아한다.]
  • - If there is some meat left on the bones, all the better

 

  • all the more [더욱더, 오히려 더, 도리어]
  • spoken used to emphasize how much better, easier etc something is than it would be in a different situation
  • - Clayton’s achievement is all the more remarkable when you consider his poor performance last season.
  • - The dispute was all the more bitter because a prize was at stake.
  • - His job was made all the more easier by drivers who hadn't bothered to take measures to stop people like him

 

  • and that [더욱이, 게다가]
  • - I want you to do this, and that promptly. [이것을 해주기 바란다, 더욱이 바로]

 

  • and what not [기타 여러 가지(등등)]
  • spoken an expression used at the end of a list of things when you do not want to give the names of everything
  • - Put your bags, cases, and whatnot in the back of the car.

 

 

 

  • answer for ~ [~을 보증하다, ~의 책임을 지다(be responsible for ~)]
  • 1 to explain to people in authority why you did something wrong or why something happened, and be punished if necessary
  • - Their coach must answer for the team’s poor performance.
  • have a lot to answer forinformal to be responsible for causing a lot of trouble
  • can’t answer for somebodyspoken used to say that you cannot make a decision for someone who is not there, or give their opinion
  • - I’m sure John will help us – I can’t really answer for the others.

 

  • answer to ~ [~에 부합하다], [~에 응답하다, ~에 반응을 보이다]
  • answer to a description [기술서와 부합하다]
  • 1 to give an explanation to someone, especially about something that you have done wrong
  • - Phipps answers to me and me alone.
  • answer to the name of something- to be called a particular name – used humorously
  • - a well-dressed young woman answering to the name of Suzanne

 

  • anything but ~ [~이외에는 (이외라면) 무엇이나], [결코 ~ 아닌, ~는커녕]
  • - I will do anything but that. [그 밖의 일이라면 무엇이나 하겠다]
  • - He is anything but a scholar. [그는 결코 학자라고는 할 수 없다.]
  • used to emphasize that someone or something does not have a particular quality
  • - Maria is anything but stupid!
