  • at the [a] rate of ~ [~의 비율로]
  • NUMBER the number of times something happens, or the number of examples of something within a certain period
  • - Asylum seekers were entering Britain at a rate of 1,600 per day.
  • MONEY a charge or payment that is set according to a standard scale
  • - They only pay tax at a rate of 5%.
  • SPEED the speed at which something happens over a period of time
  • - Iceland is getting wider at a rate of about 0.5 cm per year.

  • - at the risk of one’s life [목숨을 걸고]
  • at the risk of doing something
  • used when you think that what you are going to say or do may have a bad result, may offend or annoy people etc
  • - At the risk of sounding stupid, can I ask a question?

  • at the thought of ~ [~을 생각하면]

 

  • at the utmost [기껏해야=at most]

 

  • at (the) worst [아무리 나빠도, 최악의 경우에도]
  • - At worst, our lives are safe. [최악의 경우라도, 우리의 생명은 안전하다]

 

  • be a good [poor] hand at ~ [~을 잘한다(서투르다)]
  • - She is a good hand at painting. [그녀는 그림을 잘 그린다]

 

  • be absorbed in ~ [~에 열중하다].
  • - Judith lay on the settee, absorbed in her book

 

  • be acquainted with ~ [~와 아는 사이이다], [~에 정통하고 있다]
  • formal to know about something, because you have seen it, read it, used it etc
  • - She was well acquainted with classical literature.

 

  • be badly off [생계가 궁색하다=poor] ↔ be well off [유복하게 지내다]
  • especially 영국식 (also bad-off 미국식) not having much money

 

  • be bent on ~ [~에 결심하고 있다]
  • bent on something
  • completely determined to do something, especially something bad
  • - a crowd of hooligans bent on violence
  • be bent on doing something
  • - They seemed bent on destroying his career.

 

  • be born to ~ [~하게 태어나다]
  • be born to do/be something
  • to be very suitable for a particular job, activity etc
  • - He was born to be a politician.

 

  • be bound to do [~을 할 의무가 있다], [반드시~하다]
  • - We are bound to keep our word. [우리는 약속을 지킬 의무가 있다.]
  • - He is bound to fail. [그는 반드시 실패하겠지]

 

  • be buried in ~ [~에 몰두하다, ~에 잠기다=be lost in ~]
  • - be buried in thought [생각에 잠기다]

 

  • be charged with ~ [~의 비난을 받고 있다, (죄를) 쓰고 있다.], [~의 책임을 지고 있다]

 

  • be clear of ~ [~이 없다=be free from ~]
  • - You are now clear of suspicion. [자네는 이제 혐의를 벗었네]
  • to not be touching something, or to be past someone or something
  • - Wait to cross until the street is clear of cars.
  • - The curtains should be a couple of inches clear of the floor.

 

  • be common to ~ [~에 공통하다]
  • - This point is common to them all. [이점은 그들 모두 공통되고 있다]
  • SAME/SIMILAR common aims, beliefs, ideas etc are shared by several people or groups
  • - a theme that is common to all her novels

 

 

  • be concerned about ~ [~을 걱정하다]
  • - I am concerned about him. [그가 걱정이다]
  • WORRIED worried about something
  • - She is concerned about how little food I eat.
  • LOVE/CARE caring about someone and whether they are happy and healthy
  • concerned for/about
  • - He was genuinely concerned for the children.

 

  • be concerned with ~ [~와 관계가 있다]
  • - He is concerned with the plan. [그는 그 계획에 관계하고 있다.]
  • INVOLVED involved in something or affected by it
  • - all the people concerned with children’s education
  • THINK SOMETHING IS IMPORTANT believing that something is important
  • - Many politicians are more concerned with power and control than with the good of the people.

 

  • be content(ed) with ~ [~에 만족하다] ↔ be not content(ed) with ~ [시쁘다, 마음에 차지 않아서 시들하다]
  • - be contented with honest poverty [청빈에 만족하다]
  • happy and satisfied
  • - We’ll be content with a respectable result in tomorrow’s match.

 

  • be convinced of ~ [~을 확신하다]
  • feeling certain that something is true
  • - Researchers are convinced of a genetic cause for the disease.
