Hello everyone,

When we write in English, we think about what we want to emphasize, how to make memorable expressions, and cool sentences to deliver to the reader.

Even if we have a creative talent, we can't write all the sentence creatively.

The sentence we write is not a new sentence. It is common to refer to newspapers, magazines, novels, and books that we have read before and reconstruct appropriate expressions to fit one’s argument.

Then which sentence should you refer to most appropriate to convey your meaning to others?  My recommendation is the inauguration speech of the President of the United States.

Presidential inauguration speech should be understood by many people. In order to do that, the content should not be difficult, but the sentence should be simple and give a strong. Therefore, the inaugural speech is composed of prestigious scholars of the time. We can also develop an eye for understanding the times.

For this reason, I recommend those who have difficulty in writing English to read the inaugural speech. Except for difficult grammar terms, interpretation of words, and listing of similar words, I explained it easily so that you can be interested in writing simply by reading and understanding the entire contents rather than by organizing for learning.

The original text and translation of the inaugural address were referred to the U.S. Embassy website. The original text has a lot of sentences, so the content is long, but I divided it short so that you can read it without burden. If you keep reading it until the end, you’ll have your own writing skills.

Intro

영작을 하다 보면 강조하고 싶은 내용, 기억에 남는 표현, 멋있는 문장을 어떻게 만들어야 독자에게 잘 전달할 수 있을까 고민하게 됩니다.

창의적인 소질이 있다 하더라도 모든 문장을 창의적으로 쓸 수는 없습니다.

우리가 작문하는 문장은 새로운 문장이 아닙니다. 이전에 읽었던 신문, 잡지, 소설, 서적을 참조하여 적절한 표현을 자신의 주장에 맞게 재구성하는 것이 일반적입니다.

그렇다면 자신의 뜻을 다른 사람에게 전달하기에 가장 적절한 문장은 어떤 것을 참조하면 좋을까요?  제가 추천하는 방법은 미국 대통령의 취임사입니다.

대통령 취임사는 많은 국민들이 이해해야 합니다. 그러기 위해선 내용이 어렵지 않고 문장이 간단하며 강한 느낌을 주어야 합니다. 그래서 취임사는 당대 석학들이 작성한 명문장들로 구성되어 있습니다. 덤으로 시대를 이해하는 안목도 키울 수 있습니다.

이런 이유로 영작을 어려워하시는 분들에게 취임사 읽기를 권해드립니다. 어려운 문법 용어, 단어의 해석, 유사단어의 나열은 빼고, 학습을 위한 구성보다는 단순히 읽고 전체 내용을 이해하는 것만으로 작문에 흥미를 가지실 수 있도록 쉽게 해설해 보았습니다.

The 7th Body of Original

My fellow Americans, we have to be different than this.

America has to be better than this.

And, I believe America is better than this.

Just look around.

Here we stand, in the shadow of a Capitol dome that was completed amid the Civil War, when the Union itself hung in the balance.

Yet we endured and we prevailed.

Here we stand looking out to the great Mall where Dr. King spoke of his dream.

Here we stand, where 108 years ago at another inaugural, thousands of protestors tried to block brave women from marching for the right to vote.

Today, we mark the swearing-in of the first woman in American history elected to national office – Vice President Kamala Harris.

Don’t tell me things can’t change.

Here we stand across the Potomac from Arlington National Cemetery, where heroes who gave the last full measure of devotion rest in eternal peace.

And here we stand, just days after a riotous mob thought they could use violence to silence the will of the people, to stop the work of our democracy, and to drive us from this sacred ground.

That did not happen.

It will never happen.

미국 국민 여러분, 우리는 이와는 달라야 합니다.

미국은 이보다는 나아야 합니다.

미국은 이보다 나은 곳이라고 저는 믿습니다.

둘러보십시오.

그리고 우리는 불과 며칠 전 소란을 일으킨 폭도들이 폭력을 통해 국민의 뜻을 억누를 수 있다고, 우리 민주주의를 중단시키고, 이 성스러운 곳에서 우리를 몰아낼 수 있다고 생각했던 곳에 서있습니다.

그런 일은 일어나지 않았습니다.
