It is no coincidence that our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government.

It is time for us to realize that we are too great a nation to limit ourselves to small dreams.

We are not, as some would have us believe, loomed to an inevitable decline.

I do not believe in a fate that will all on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing.

So, with all the creative energy at our command, let us begin an era of national renewal.

Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew; our faith and our hope.

 

We have every right to dream heroic dreams.

Those who say that we are in a time when there are no heroes just don't know where to look.

You can see heroes every day going in and out of factory gates.

Others, a handful in number, produce enough food to feed all of us and then the world beyond.

You meet heroes across a counter--and they are on both sides of that counter.

There are entrepreneurs with faith in themselves and faith in an idea who create new jobs, new wealth and opportunity.

They are individuals and families whose taxes support the Government and whose voluntary gifts support church, charity, culture, art, and education. Their patriotism is quiet but deep.

Their values sustain our national life.

현재 우리들이 갖고 있는 문제들은, 불필요하고도 과도한 정부의 성장으로 말미암아 정부가 우리의 생활에 간섭과 침해를 하게 되는 정도에 정비례하여 증가한다는 것은 우연한 일이 아닙니다.

지금이야말로 우리가 우리나라는 너무 크고 위대해서 우리들은 작은 꿈속에서만 묶어둘 수는 없다는 것을 깨달아야 할 때입니다.

어떤 사람들이 보려 하는 바와 같이 우리는 어쩔 수 없이 쇠퇴의 길을 가도록 정해져 있지 않습니다.

나는 우리가 어떠한 일을 하든지 간에 파멸의 운명이 우리를 기다릴 것이라고 믿지 않습니다.

그러나 우리가 아무것도 하지 않으면 그 운명이 닥쳐오리라는 것을 믿습니다.

그러므로 우리가 구사할 수 있는 모든 창조력을 발휘하여서 국가를 쇄신하는 새로운 시대를 열어 봅시다.

우리의 결심, 용기 그리고 강인함을 재생해 봅시다. 우리의 믿음과 희망을 다시 새롭게 세워 봅시다…….
